Bass Rock Gannets
Hullo ma wee blog,
Here's a nice film of the Bass Rock Gannets. I went back to the previous post and added a couple of links that I should have included - one on more info on the rock and one for the Scottish Seabird Centre's live feed web-cam in the gannet colony itself if you want to have a look.
see you later.

Honorary nature boy! Noisy beggars, aren't they? O and I stood on the cliff top at Tantallon Castle a couple of summers ago on a very still Sunday morning watching gannets from the Bass Rock diving offshore for fish. Even although they were about a quarter of a mile away, we could here the sound of them entering the water, like a flat stone chopping into the water edge-on!
Aye I've heard that sound too. I'm glad the rock is so far out though - the stink of all that ammonia must be overwhelming!!!
Cheers....Al
Went out there once with our Camera Club !
Never again ,,, we were shit upon from every angle and you're so right , the smell will live with me forever ! And the pics were rubbish to boot !
On the other hand I've enjoyed the view out to Bass rock whilst playing golf at The Glen in North Berwick .,., a fine course ( but only when the rain isn't pelting it down and the wind isn't blowing you into the sea ! )
@Scudder - I hear that the Whitekirk course further along the coast has some great views too!
@Al - all seabird cliffs honk to high heaven!
SNB - Is that you drumming up some business for your brother? lol....
I know the smell of seabirds too from our walks to Fast Castle where there's a big gull colony on the cliffs around you there.
Scudder - it must be hard to focus a camera while avoiding being bombed by bird poo!
i look at the bass every day at work from whitekirk and it is a truly stunning island..need to take the boat trip out again during the summer holidays next month..im going to rome...around our lovely county for 2 weeks!
Al - you caught me out!
