Lothians Volcanic Sunset

Hullo ma wee blog,

With all airports in the UK closed today due to a cloud of ash from the Icelandic volcano with an unpronounceable name, weather punters were telling us all to look to the sky tonight for a potentially dramatic sunset. So camera in hand I set of to document this predicted masterpiece and took the following photo's.

I hope you like them......

Wonderful photos and extra dramatic against your black background. They remind me of the skies we sometimes had in Eastern British Columbia during a particularly bad forest fire season.

They look like paintings. Great job, thank you for sharing them with us. I remember when Mt. St. Helens in Washington state went off, we could see the dust cloud from Wyoming, I wonder how that compares to your distance? Have a nice weekend, will you be up to see if the sunrise is as lovely?

Thanks guys,

The camera has made the colours more spectacular on them to be honest, but it was nice, if short lived. The sunsets for the next few days may be quite colourful as well I hear so I'll be keeping my eyes open.

Yes C.K. it's Blackcastle mast from Fast Castle Head at max magnification on my lens. It was hand held so a bit shaky. We had quite a bit of cloud at our end of the county which cut down the impact of the sunset I thought and made me have to concentrate on getting closer in to the target. The cloud wasn't particularly interesting or adding anything to the shot I felt.

I never made dawn as I didn't go to bed until after 2am........ always tomorrow though!

Great pics Al - you obviously had more volcanic ash and dust over in the east than we do here in Stirling - I was looking forward to a spectacular sunset here last night after all the media coverage but it was exceedingly normal and not at all red. maye tonight - i had some ash deposit on my car roof overnight so maybe there is more in the atmosphere here now! Disappointed at the refusal of so many BBC newsreaders and news presenters to try pronouncing the volcano's Icelandic name - doesn't look THAT hard! ;¬)

@Kat_RN - the disatnce to Scotland from the eruption is about 700 miles I think, or so they said last night on the BBC TV news.
